Curriculum

Green Beetz’ holistic STEM-based curriculum includes four modules. The curriculum was developed in partnership with the New York Academy of Sciences to ensure that all content is aligned with Common Core State Standards

Welcome to Green Beetz

The welcome lesson invites students to consider their relationship with food.  We welcome them to Green Beetz, introducing them to our unique format, activities, and “secret ingredients”.

Module 1: Food & The environment

The first module teaches students about the natural food system, how it has evolved from pre-historic times to the present, and the effects of the modern food system on the environment.

Module 2: Food & The Body

Module two teaches students about the nutritional properties of food, how their bodies process food, and how their diet affects their health in the short and long run.

Module 3: The Big Business of Food

Module three addresses the many economic aspects of the modern food system, including corporate practices, food marketing and advertising, and the social impacts of unequal access to healthy food.

Module 4: Cooking Basics & The Culture of Food

Module 4 introduces students to the different ways food is prepared in the US and around the world.  This includes an introduction to basic cooking skills for preparing healthy meals and celebrates the role of food in our lives.

Farewell Lesson

This event is a culmination of the Green Beetz program.  Students will have an opportunity to show off their food literacy in a grand finale Green Beetz Test Your Noodle Competition.
